World Athletics Championships: South Africa’s Van Niekerk Losses 200m Final, Makwala Dreams Shattered

South African athlete, Wayde van Niekerk has shockingly lost the 200 metres final to Turkey’s Ramil Guliyev at the World Athletics Championships. Van Niekerk, who won the 400 meters gold medal on Wednesday, failed to match Michael Johnson’s 200m-400m gold medal double 22 years ago, returning in the time of 20.11 seconds behind Turkey’s Ramil Guliyev 20.09 seconds, to claim the silver medal.
Isaac Makwala’s dreams of a medal at the World Championships was also shattered, as the Botswanan, who was controversially excluded from the 400 meters on medical grounds, finished in sixth place with the time of 20.44.

Makwala was initially excluded from the 200 meters event and had to run a solo time trial to qualify for the 200 meters final, following intervention from the Botswanan Athletics Federation.
